The star studded cast includes Amanda Seyfried as Linda Lovelace, Peter Sarsgaard as her abusive husband.  Hank Azaria, Sharon Stone, James Franco and Adam Brody.

Film Review - Guardians Of The Galaxy

Film: Guardians Of The Galaxy
Cast: Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel.
Director: James Gunn

This is a real fantasy adventure.  Another in the huge line of Marvel movies.  You can find a link from this movie to The Avengers and there is word that these 2 franchises might just collide in the future.

So we join Star Lord (Chris Pratt) a human type who was abducted from Earth a long time ago.  He likes to 'acquire' things for the highest price.  We join him as he is after a valuable orb.  He has no idea just how valuable and powerful the orb is.

He forms a fragile alliance with Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax (WWE's Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel) and  Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

They somehow band together as they try to avoid the scary Ronan the Accusor (Lee Pace).

Look out for some great action sequences.  There is a wonderful supporting cast as well which includes
Glen Close, Josh Brolin.  You get a bonus point if you can spot Stan Lee in the movie.

If you love Star Wars and Star Trek then this is your kind of movie.

Make sure you stay till after the credits for a bonus scene.

Best viewed in IMAX 3D.

In commemoration of the 2nd anniversary of the Marikana Massacre on 16th August Cinema Nouveau will be showing this documentary for 2 shows only.

The Immigrant
Director: James Gray
Cast: Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner

A really stylish film this one.  Expertly directed by James Gray.  We join a young lady Ewa
(Marion Cotillard) who arrives in the USA with her sister.  They are seperated by authorities due to the ill health of her sister.  She finds herself stuck in America, a strange lady in a strange land.  She meets
Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix) the ever polite young man who helps her find a place and shelters her.  There is of course a price she has to pay.  Along the way she meets a young talented magician (Jeremy Renner) who shows her a world of possibilities.  Look out for some brilliant performances, very well written and stylish direction.

Cold Harbour
Director: Carey Schonegevel
Cast: Tony Kgoroge, Fana Mokoena, Yu Nan, Deon Lotz

A movie of many shades.  Set in a gloomy Cape Town.  Not the one that tourists know.  This one is full of gangsters and corrupt cops and abalone smugglers.  We join a veteran cop Sizwe (Tony Kgoroge) who fights the good fight to solve his case.  Along the way side stepping martial arts assassins and looking out for gangsters.

Well directed, good script and some very good performances.

Rating: 7/10

Tony Kgoroge won the Best Actor Award (Shared) at Durban International Film Festival 2014 for his performance and you can see why.

Million Dollar Arm
Director: Craig Gillespie
Cast: Jon Hamm, Suraj Sharma, Alan Arkin

Enter the world of the sports agent.  We join a struggling sports agent J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm) who is fighting to secure a big deal.  He comes up with an idea of exporting Indian cricketers in a talent competition as a way to find the next big baseball pitcher.  One of those inspiring feel good movies.  Well acted and full of funny moments.

IDC and NFVF will now provide funding for Emerging Black Filmmakers

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) have announced a new initiative targeting local filmmakers and producers.

The Emerging Black Filmmakers Fund (EBFF), which the two institutions have set up, will provide financial and other support to emerging black filmmakers and is aimed at assisting filmmakers in creating feature films that are directed and produced by black South Africans.

EBFF, according to IDC, will strengthen the local film industry, ensuring that filmmakers and producers create compelling content for South African consumption.

Basil Ford, Head of Media and Motion Pictures at the IDC says, “We have identified a growing need to support the production of South African films and documentaries, particularly by black filmmakers and producers.”

Zama Mkosi, CEO of the NFVF, says this partnership addresses one of the organisation’s key objectives to ensure that past imbalances in the film industry are addressed. “Creating this opportunity will benefit our industry immensely as content is key in elevating our industry, and as we take the sector to another level of attracting new markets and investments.”

Funding will be limited to six qualifying and viable feature films per annum over three years. The fund amount per film is R4.5m for development and production, and R500 000 for marketing.

Cinema Nouveau and Ster-Kinekor, in association with Picturehouse Entertainment, are delighted to announce limited screenings of the hilarious Monty Python Live (mostly) stage show, at select cinemas on 06, 09 and 16 August 2014 at 20:00. These include the four Cinema Nouveau theatres – Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg, Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria, Gateway in Durban and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town – and Ster-Kinekor sites at Bedford View, Cedar Square, Sandton and Somerset Mall.

Picturehouse Entertainment has secured the international distribution rights to broadcast the Monty Python Live (mostly) show that was recorded on 20 July 2014. The historic Last Night of the Pythons Live from London’s O2 Arena, is currently being screened in cinemas across the globe, including here in South Africa, thanks to Ster-Kinekor Theatres and Cinema Nouveau.

Monty Python fans around the world have the opportunity of joining one of the most anticipated live events of the year, and the chance to say farewell to the Pythons, together on stage for the first time in more than three decades, on this last and special night. The live show, featuring the inimitable talents of John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with Graham Chapman, and performances by Carol Cleveland, is directed by Aubrey Powell and produced by Fiz Oliver.

There was huge demand for tickets for this, the first live performances on stage by the stars of Monty Python since performing at the Hollywood Bowl on 15 September 1980 – and 40 years after their last stage appearance in the UK, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

"Thanks to the wonderful invention of moving pictures, The Last Night of Monty Python is coming to a cinema near you. Get your knotted handkerchiefs out and warm your brains one last time at any one of thousands of cinemas across the world. Join the crowd live from London’s O2 in a final weepy, hilarious, uproarious, outrageous, farewell to the five remaining Pythons as they head for The Old Jokes Home… on the big screen, in HD,” said the Pythons.

“At first there was some resistance to the idea of having to share each other’s tights again, but when it was explained that we were going to get paid, the deal was signed in a record 43.6 seconds. Relief turned to pure joy when medical checks proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that five of us were still alive. Even Graham (Chapman), though less alive than the rest of us, is to be reunited with us all via the miracle of digital re-creation.”

The running time of the ‘live’ show is approximately 3hrs 10mins, and includes a 20-minute interval.

Picturehouse Entertainment continues to push the boundaries of live cinema broadcasts, and the screening of Monty Python Live (mostly) is set to be one of the biggest – and certainly funniest – events of the year.
