STER-KINEKOR RELEASES THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 IN IMAX® 3D AT THE GATEWAY THEATRE
Watching this superhero weave his web on the IMAX® 3D screen will be an immersive cinema experience

The Amazing Spider-Man is back - and , as always, this Marvel superhero is more than ready and willing to battle the everyday villains to keep everyone safe. Don’t miss the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro on the IMAX® 3D screen at Ster-Kinekor’s popular cinema complex at Gateway, from Friday, 25 April. Following the success of The Amazing Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield returns in the lead role in this action-packed sequel.
The IMAX® release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX 3D Experience® using proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customised theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
We have always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the daily struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. However, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro, Peter Parker discovers that a far greater conflict than even he could anticipate, lies ahead.
It’s great being Spider-Man (Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone).  But being Spider-Man also comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city.

With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. When his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
This adventurous sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man will have you ducking and diving in the cinema as the action of The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro plays out on the powerful IMAX® 3D screen. Audiences should prepare themselves for a full-on, immersive cinematic experience like nothing they have experienced before!

Durban Film Selected for Cannes

A film produced and written by Durban filmmaker and AFDA Durban Scriptwriting Lecturer, Janet van Eeden, A Shot at the Big Time, the short, has been selected for the Cannes Court Metrage, the short film corner of the official Cannes Festival 2014. It was chosen out of over a million entries.

(Janet van Eeden - Picture by Kwazi Ngubane)

“This honour is something my co-producer, Magda M. Olchawska, and I have dreamed of since we joined forces to make A Shot at the Big Time, the short,” says Van Eeden. “We met online when I ran the Indiegogo.com crowd-funding campaign in 2011. I’d given up on the dream recently and am working hard at present raising funds to make the feature film by the end of the year, so when Magda let me know late on Thursday night that we’d been accepted I was over the moon.”

Van Eeden launched the crowd-funding campaign for Shot on 11th of the 11th 2011, on Remembrance Day, in remembrance of her brother, Jimmy, who was killed on the border in mysterious circumstances after being there for only three days in 1979.

“I’d never been able to forget Jimmy’s tragic life, and after being challenged by film and theatre critic, Robert Greig, to write about my own life instead of writing plays about literary greats, I finally had the courage to put pen to paper and tackle one of the saddest experiences of my life,” she explains.

“Jimmy was my idol in the small town of Odendaalsrus. He was a rock star in the eyes of all the youngsters as he was the lead singer in a band which dreamed of making the big time. When he received his call-up papers when he was only seventeen, his dream was put on hold. Especially after he had a traumatic incident in basics which made him go AWOL, steal a rifle and fire rounds of bullets into the rubbish dump with the members of his band. A terrible accident happened and Jimmy had a breakdown and was classified as mentally unfit for military service. He tried to put his life back together again but he was broken by the events,” says Van Eeden. “Three years later the army forgot about the fact that they’d classified him as unfit and called him up to do Border duty. He was part of the infantry but he did not want to kill anyone. There are conflicting stories of what happened to him on the border on that fateful day, but all we know for sure is that three days after arriving on the border, my parents received a phone call telling them that Jimmy had been killed by a ricochet bullet.”

(Brad Backhouse as Jimmy; Tim Wells as Wiese; Caval Goodyear as Smit.  A Shot at the Big Time. Picture by Val Adamson)

The feature film script of A Shot at the Big Time is based on the the story of the tragic loss of Van Eeden’s brother which she says is Oedipal in its intensity. When she couldn’t get funding for the feature without giving away the rights to the film completely, and thereby compromising on the integrity of the story, she decided to do a crowd-funding campaign after listening to US expert Peter Broderick at the Durban Film Mart in 2011. She decided to produce the film herself. She didn’t raise enough money for the feature on Indiegogo.com but received so much support, including finding gifted young director from Australia, Stephen de Villiers and London producer Magda M. Olchawska, that they decided to shoot the short film instead. The lead actors auditioned online as part of the crowd-funding campaign and “the best actors I could’ve dreamt of” were found in Brad Backhouse as Jimmy and Sean C. Michael as the antagonist Van Staden. De Villiers flew out in July 2012 to film Shot the Short. Even an executive Producer, Athol Williams, was found through the campaign and he gave whatever he could to make the short film happen.

A Shot at the Big Time was one of the projects selected for the Durban FilmMart in 2012 and the short film premiered at the Durban International Film Festival in July 2013. It was awarded an eThekwini Film Award in November
2013.

Producer, Magda M. Olchawska will represent A Shot at the Big Time at Cannes, as there has not been enough time to raise sponsorship for Van Eeden’s visit. However, she hopes the whole team  will represent Shot next year when they enter the feature into the festival.

Ster-Kinekor Hosts The Premiere of 'One Chance' the true story of Paul Potts

STER-KINEKOR HOSTS THE PREMIERE OF ONE CHANCE, THE TRUE LIFE STORY OF THE FIRST WINNER OF ‘BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT’

Special performance by Paul Potts, the talent who inspired the film, before the screening

The premiere of One Chance, the true life story of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ winner, Paul Potts, will feature an exclusive live performance by the amazing opera singer before the film is screened to more than 500 invited guests. Hosted by Ster-Kinekor at its Cedar Square cinema complex in Fourways, the red-carpet occasion takes place on Thursday evening, 10 April.

Potts, from the UK, is visiting Johannesburg for the week as the special guest of Ster-Kinekor Entertainment to promote the film he inspired, and to attend the premiere. Guests will be treated to his wonderful singing voice as he performs Puccini’s‘Nessun Dorma’, the famous aria that set him on his path to stardom.
From the director of The Devil Wears PradaOne Chance is the remarkable and inspirational true story of Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night.  Paul became an instant YouTube phenomenon after being chosen by Simon Cowell for 'Britain's Got Talent.'  Wowing audiences worldwide with his phenomenal voice, Paul went on to win the competition, and the hearts of millions.

Fresh from celebrating his Tony Award-winning Broadway run in 'One Man, Two Guvnors', BAFTA winner James Corden (The History Boys) stars as Paul Potts and is supported by an acclaimed ensemble cast that includes Julie Walters (Mamma Mia!, Calendar Girls, Billy Elliot), Mackenzie Crook (The Pirates of the Caribbean), Colm Meaney (Get Him To The Greek), Jemima Rooper (Kinky Boots), Valeria Bilello (Pazze Di Me) and rising star Alexandra Roach (The Iron Lady).

Directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me, Hope Springs) and written by Justin Zackham (The Bucket List), One Chance is produced by Mike Menchel, Brad Weston, Kris Thykier (Kick-Ass, The Debt, I Give It a Year), Simon Cowell, and is executive produced by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

On the night of June 9th 2007, a new television reality show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ went on air in the UK. On its first ever broadcast, a shy, unassuming man opened his mouth to sing the famous aria ‘Nessun Dorma’, from Puccini’s opera, “Turandot”, delivering a beautiful, stirring rendition that would change his life from that moment forward.
Swept up in the contagious emotion of Giacomo Puccini’s stunning aria, and the unlikely figure with crooked teeth and diluted confidence who had crooned it for them, the show’s three judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan – stared in awe at what they had just witnessed, while the audience of 2,000 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff erupted in a standing ovation.
Britain was instantly won over by Paul Potts, who was then working as a manager at the Port Talbot branch of The Carphone Warehouse, and followed him on his journey to becoming the first ever winner of the new talent show and, subsequently, a world-famous opera singer. Potts’ unanticipated vocal prowess didn’t stay confined to UK shores for long, blazing a scorched trail around the globe as news of his improbable audition went viral and millions watched it for themselves on YouTube.
But despite his own admission before going on stage that he was lacking in confidence, few knew the herculean effort it had taken for Potts to reach that point, and the trials, tribulations and monumental setbacks he had suffered along the way. As thrilling as Potts’ on-air success was to behold, it was the story leading up to his ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ appearance that the filmmakers of One Chance wanted to tell: the tale of a steelworker’s son from south Wales who fell in love with opera at an early age and, despite bullying, skepticism and physical hardship, never gave up on trying to achieve his dreams. And, by the way, it’s also a comedy!

The tale of how Paul goes from an everyman to a media sensation is a testament to the human spirit.

One Chance releases at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor cinemas on Thursday, 17 April – a perfect family movie to enjoy over the long weekend. Bookings are open, and standard ticket prices apply (including the discounts and benefits afforded to members of the SK Club, Discovery Vitality and Edgars Club loyalty programmes).
